Chapanoke Affordable Housing Development Breaks Ground in South Raleigh
Chapanoke, an affordable housing development in South Raleigh, has officially broken ground. The $58 million project is expected to bring 200 apartments to the area by 2028, offering more housing options for residents who meet the income requirements.
The development is being built on land donated by Wake Technical Community College. Plans include one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Some of the homes will be set aside for eligible Wake Tech students, giving them another option for affordable accommodation while studying.

The project will have 66 one-bedroom apartments, 86 two-bedroom units and 48 three-bedroom homes, according to Wake Tech. Rents will be aimed at households earning between 30% and 70% of the area median income. This will allow the development to serve people who may find it difficult to afford homes at regular market rates.
The site is at 326 Chapanoke Road, beside Wake Tech's Public Safety Education Campus. It is also close to the planned Southern Wake Bus Rapid Transit corridor. The proposed transit connection could improve access to public transportation for future residents.
Several public officials attended the groundbreaking ceremony. Among them were US Representative Deborah Ross, Wake County Commissioner Don Mial and Raleigh City Council member Jane Harrison.
Ross highlighted the financial burden that many families endure. Housing is just one component of the monthly expenditures, as food, healthcare, childcare, and fuel are additional expenses. She also emphasized the importance of ensuring that individuals can continue residing in the community in which they work as the region develops.
Mial talked about the need for affordable homes near education and transportation. It could be especially important for students, as well as other residents, who seek to benefit from the nearby facilities.
The project makes a significant contribution to the affordability of housing in Raleigh and the entire Wake County, which is in great demand by the local population. In turn, this will help meet the growing need for habitation in the area. Notably, Chapanoke is expected to provide 200 apartments with a completed construction period in 2028.
