Morisset Social Housing Project Passes Halfway Mark in Lake Macquarie
Construction of a $17 million social housing project in Morisset, New South Wales, has moved beyond the halfway point. The development will bring 15 new homes to the Lake Macquarie area, with work expected to finish by mid-2027.
The project is being built on vacant land in Morisset. It will include nine two-bedroom townhouses and six three-bedroom townhouses. Once completed, the homes are expected to provide accommodation for more than 40 people.
New homes taking shape in Morisset
The development is close to local shops, schools and parks. Morisset train station is also nearby, giving future residents access to public transport.
The project comes as the NSW Government continues to expand social and affordable housing across the state. More than 5,175 new social and affordable homes have been delivered since April 2023, according to the government.
Housing construction is also planned elsewhere in Lake Macquarie. The government expects 27 new homes in the local government area to be completed by mid-2027.
Alongside the townhouses, the site will have four Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) homes. These are being delivered by community housing provider Evolve Housing. The accommodation will include self-contained units, as well as shared areas and spaces for support services.
Government funding backs the development
The Morisset project is part of the NSW Government’s $6.6 billion Building Homes for NSW programme. Its targets include 8,400 new public housing homes and 21,000 affordable and market homes. The programme also aims to upgrade 30,000 existing social housing properties.
Funding for the Morisset development comes through the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF). The programme supports housing projects involving government bodies, community housing providers and industry partners.
Housing Australia chief executive Sarah Amos spoke about Evolve Housing’s experience in providing homes for people who need them. Evolve Housing Group chief executive Lyall Gorman also highlighted the role of HAFF funding in helping the organisation expand its work across New South Wales.
For Morisset, the immediate focus is on completing construction. The project is expected to add more housing options to the area by mid-2027, including homes designed for people with disability. The development will contribute to the region’s housing supply as work continues towards its planned completion date.
